The Big C: Excess weight second biggest preventable cause

05/09/2017

While most people associate habits such as smoking as a preventable cause of cancer, a recent LiveLighter survey shows only 56% of people were aware of the link between being overweight and an increased risk of cancer.

“The survey showed most people were aware of the link between being overweight or obese and the increased risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes,” says Maria Szybiak, LiveLighter’s Campaign Director, “However we were surprised at the low level of awareness of the link to an increased risk of cancer”.

LiveLighter are aiming to draw attention to the link between excess weight and the increased risk of cancer for Australian adults. A recently placed billboard at Perth Underground Station is just one way LiveLighter are increasing awareness.

“Scientific evidence shows a strong link between being overweight and increased cancer risk,” says Terry Slevin, Director of Education and Research at Cancer Council WA, “As a preventable cause there are small changes people can make to reduce their risk”.

About one third of cancers are preventable by making simple lifestyle changes. Regardless of weight, eating well and being active reduces your risk not only of heart disease and type 2 diabetes but also 13 types of cancer including breast and bowel.

LiveLighter’s 5 Tips to Reduce Risk

  1. Avoid sugary drinks
  2. Limit junk food
  3. Eat more vegetables and fruit
  4. Be active everyday
  5. Avoid alcohol

With over two thirds of Australian adults overweight or obese an increased understanding of health implications is important.

“Being aware of the link is important,” says Ms Szybiak,”by making small changes such as eating more fruit and veg and being active everyday you can take steps to reduce your risk”.
