Cancer Council WA’s LiveLighter program has launched a new digital campaign, Start Small, to encourage and motivate WA adults to save money on living expenses whilst maintaining a healthy diet and keeping physically active.

People are encouraged to register their small, health promoting and money-saving goals via the Small Wheel of Small Things to get tools and resources that support their goal, and a chance to win a prize.

Cancer Council WA Food and Movement Programs Manager, Ainslie Sartori, said the campaign was an expansion of the previous Boost Your Budget campaign and includes low cost and free ways to be active and build healthy habits.

“We know from our previous research* that the rising costs of living continues to have an effect on peoples spending habits,” Ms Satori said.

"This campaign offers tips on how to eat well on a budget and ways to motivate people to make healthy snacks and meals instead, but also includes resources for low cost and free ways to be active, the importance of socialising, and how to build healthy habits by starting small."

“We encourage all West Aussies to jump online at LiveLighter.com.au to find out easy and affordable ways to start living their best, healthiest life.” LiveLighter is encouraging the WA community to get in on the fun by giving the digital wheel a spin on air, and opting to set a goal for themselves which can be followed up on over the course of the campaign.

Start Small will run until 21 September 2024 on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and online.

Background - About LiveLighter

LiveLighter is a healthy lifestyle social marketing campaign targeting West Australian adults. It is funded by the WA Department of Health. The campaign was originally developed by the National Heart Foundation (WA) and officially launched in 2012. The campaign has been delivered by Cancer Council WA since July 2018.

The LiveLighter campaign aims to reduce the burden of chronic disease caused by overweight and obesity, poor diet, and physical inactivity. It seeks to support WA State efforts to:

  • Halt and then reverse current increasing trends of adult overweight and obesity in Western Australia.
  • Increase the prevalence of Western Australian adults consuming a diet in line with the national dietary guidelines.
  • Increase the prevalence of Western Australian adults meeting the physical activity and sedentary behaviour recommendations.

LiveLighter is comprehensive in its approach and employs a range of hard-hitting, TV-led public education campaigns, community-based support strategies, production and distribution of public education materials, research and evaluation, public relations activities, media and political advocacy on obesity prevention issues, and input into the development of public health policy.

To the editor: No “headless bodies” please

Having overweight or obesity comes with a lot of health issues. Some of these are related to the stigma that is attached to living in a larger body. We urge you to use images that are respectful, inclusive and non-stigmatising when reporting on issues related to body weight. For example, show people in larger bodies participating in everyday activities that are not related to weight gain, and use images that include their faces. We are happy to provide you with suitable images if required. Thank you for helping to set a higher standard for reporting on weight issues.

Note: Not everyone living in a larger body is unhealthy, and not everyone living in a smaller body is healthy. Eating well and being physically active are behaviours that will reduce cancer risk, regardless of a person’s weight
