Do you love to go on fun date nights but find it tricky to think up new activities each time? If you’re defaulting to dinner dates or meeting up at a bar when catching up with friends, stop right there!

Next time you’re planning a date (or catching up with your mate), check out our list of special date ideas to choose from. You can count on these to get you moving, boost those endorphins, and it might be cheaper than a dinner out anyway. Not that dates are competitive (unless you’re playing mini golf), but I reckon that’s a win.

These ideas are great for all quality time scenarios with your partner, friend, family or number one (you!).

Weeknight fun

Why wait until the weekend to have a good time? Here are a few ideas to get you out of the house, doing some physical activity and having some laughs.

  • Head to a local basketball court to shoot some hoops
  • Meet at an art gallery or museum
  • Find a local trail to walk through during golden hour
  • Collect shells on a beach – bonus points for a heart shape!
  • Build a blanket fort
  • Play a game of tennis
  • Queue up your favourite songs and listen to them together on a walk
  • Make or buy a kite and fly the kite at your park (dueting the Mary Poppins soundtrack optional)
  • Dust off a board game you haven’t played in a while (Code Names, Monopoly Deal, Moniker and Articulate are currently some of my favourites)
  • Head to a local line dancing gig (or learn at home on YouTube!)

Travel to and from a candlelit dinner

Start the fun from your front door.

  • Embrace helmet hair and ride a bike to dinner
  • Or try an e-scooter
  • Take public transport (you can make it a bit more exciting if only one of you knows where you’re heading)

Weekend half days

Here are some more hearty ideas to get out and about. They might take a bit of planning in advance – but they’re worth it!

  • Head out for a game of mini golf or glow in the dark golf
  • Pick fruit at an orchard or farm e.g.. a strawberry farm in the Swan Valley
  • Try geocaching
  • Set up the tent in the backyard and sleep there overnight
  • Attend a local show or local government free event – check the events page on your local government area website
  • Try out a local snorkelling spot

Courses to do together

Is there something you both want to learn? There’s nothing quite like doing a course or class together to show (or practice!) how you support each other through a challenge.

  • Skippers ticket
  • Scuba diving course
  • 4WD training
  • Pottery class
  • Interior design course

Cook dinner with your date

Have fun in the kitchen together by putting on the music and giving a new recipe a go. Bonus points if there’s leftovers for the next day. Productive date night!

  • Try a new recipe together like homemade gnocchi or dumplings
  • No-cook night: what can you make to eat without needing it to be cooked?
  • Try a TikTok trend of a fun recipe like homemade mozzarella or baked feta pasta
  • Mystery box challenge with what’s in the pantry

Morning dates

If you work a bit later in the day or have weekend mornings free, then these ones are for you:

  • Try a local run club
  • Head to a gym class together
  • Head to a community ocean event (dipping or swimming)
  • Try out a new café
  • Make your coffee at home and go for a walk together
  • Get all the brownie points and make your partner pancakes in bed

Hopefully that gives you a few ideas for your next activity. Have fun out there!
