Burnt toast and cold tea might have been your go-to choice for mum as a kid, but now that you’re all grown up it’s time to find new ways to celebrate mum on Mother’s Day.  When we are all so busy it can be hard to think of ways to make mum feel special but it doesn’t have to take a huge amount of effort and doesn’t have to mean whipping up a gourmet feast. There are plenty of simple things you can do to make your mum feel special this Mother’s Day, you might even enjoy them too!

1. Breakfast in Bed

Ah breakfast in bed, the age old Mother’s Day tradition. Giving mum the morning off from hastily getting out of bed and doing everyone’s breakfast (and a million other things) is a sure-fire way to make her feel special. And whilst this trend doesn’t look like it’s changing any time soon, the world of breakfast foods certainly has changed a lot! Whilst plain old eggs on toast used to be the breakfast favourite, now we are eating anything from Shakshuka to fruity pancakes for our first meal of the day. So what does your mum like? Is she partial to some pancakes? Avid for avo? Or maybe she is excited for eggs? Whatever it is there’s something yummy that you can make her (or that dad can help with if you need a hand).

Pancakes have come a long way since the traditional topping of lemon and sugar; below are options for yummy fruit combinations or savoury pancakes:

You can’t go wrong with smashed avocado on toast:

Eggs are the most versatile of breakfast foods, and it doesn’t take much to make them fancy:

2. Outdoor Adventures

If your mum is anything like mine then she loves to be active, and checking out a new walking trail together is a fun way for us to catch up. Here in WA we are blessed with a stunning coastline and lots of beautiful bushland and waterways. So whether you live by the ocean or in-land there is something fun and active for you to do as a family.

It could be as easy as trying a new walking track near you or for something with a bit more scenery and hard work you could try a hike. There are some great walks and hikes throughout Perth:

My favourite walk to do is Lake Monger, this isn’t on the list but walking around Lake Monger is an easy and pretty walk to do – for an added family activity try and count how many different birds you can see! There are both easy and hard walks on these lists so there is something for everyone. As well as getting out and exploring somewhere new, the other bonus is that this is a free activity! The only walks you might have to pay for are entry fees to the national parks; these are noted on the Buggy Buddys website.

If the weather is nice then you can also take advantage of our glistening waterways! There are plenty of ways to enjoy the water in WA:

      • Have a swim or bring along a ball and play a family game of catch in the water
      • Hire paddleboards and explore the Swan River
      • Hire kayaks and go for a paddle down the river or on the ocean

For something a little bit closer to home you could come up with a gardening project to do with mum (if she likes gardening, that is!) Planting some new trees, flowers or vegies could be a fun way to spend time outside together and work up an appetite for afternoon tea.

Just remember that if you are planning any outdoor adventures and the UV is above 3 you should slip, slop, slap, seek and slide.
